Julius Hanson’s parents came over from Sokendahl, Norway, in 1853, settling on a farm one mile south of the Big Canoe Church where Julius was born and raised. Mathilda Holverson Hagle’s parents came over from Hadeland, Norway, in 1852, settling on a farm along the banks of the Upper Iowa River, five miles east of Sattre in Allamakee County where she lived until marrying Julius. To this union were born five children – the oldest, a daughter, died at the age of three weeks; Mrs. Anton (Ida) Ellingson, William Hanson, Mrs. Helmer Thompson and Hattie Hanson.
